The Global Governance Conundrum: International Authority or Subsidiarity, Responsibility, and Sovereignty?

GG

Economic globalization, rising nationalism, and now the COVID pandemic have re-sparked often angry debates about the international political order. Some call for ever more authority to be transferred to supranational and transnational institutions. Others insist that global governance models have failed or open the way to authoritarian regimes led by unelected and, therefore, unaccountable bureaucrats.

This symposium will address these issues directly and stimulate frank discussion between distinguished scholars and guests. What, for example, does subsidiarity mean for caring for health, welfare, and the environment? Is national sovereignty redundant? Does economic globalization necessitate global political institutions? Or would such institutions inevitably endanger political, economic and religious freedoms and even have unintended consequences?

There will be a particular focus on how Catholic social teaching and natural law principles are critical to navigating these tense discussions while exploring serious implications for global health, economy, the environment, and civil society.
