We are seeking a Managing Editor to guide the Acton Institute’s content operation, which advances our mission. The Managing Editor is responsible for creating a long-term content strategy, assigning articles to our team of writers, providing edits, coaching writers and ensuring that any content that the Acton Institute posts or releases is clean and free of error.

The Managing Editor must possess an unparalleled attention to detail and a firm command of AP Style. This person must also have keen fact-checking skills and the good sense to question any name-spelling, buzzword usage, figures, etc. It is also essential that the Managing Editor has a good pulse on how Acton’s area of focus fits into the larger conversations going on among thought leaders and in the media, with the goal of providing Acton’s sizable audience perspective on the things they’re thinking and reading about each day. The Managing Editor will also be responsible for editing and producing our quarterly magazine, Religion & Liberty.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Content strategy: The Managing Editor is responsible for developing and executing the organization’s content strategy. This mean producing focused, consumable, compelling content that advances Acton’s mission – and ensuring this happens on a regular basis.
  • Assignments: The Managing Editor will provide assignments and direction to Acton’s stable of writers based on established priority of issues/topics in our written content. Will also vet pitches from writers to ensure they fit Acton’s mission and issues/topics priorities.
  • Content editing: The Managing Editor is responsible for maintaining a consistent voice and tone across channels. This includes web content, development writing, programs and events copy, copy for audio/video productions, and email communications.
  • Copyediting: The Managing Editor will ensure all Acton content is consistent with AP/Acton Institute style, all data are accurate and all claims are factual.
  • Writing: The Managing Editor will produce written content for Acton’s website as needed.
  • Internal communication: Making sure colleagues across departments are kept abreast of important articles and trends that can inform outreach, development and more.

Qualifications & Skills

  • 5-7 years’ demonstrated experience in writing and editing
  • Proficient in AP Style
  • Newsroom or other similar experience preferred
  • Management experience preferred
  • Supportive teammate and willingness to collaborate across departments
  • Deadline-driven
  • Detail-oriented mindset
  • Familiarity with Drupal, WordPress, and HubSpot is a plus
  • An understanding and passion for Acton’s mission and the ability to communicate it
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
