Istituto Acton sponsored a study day in collaboration with the Faculty of Canon Law of the Pontifical University Antonianum and with the patronage of the international canon law society Consociatio Internationalis Studio Iuris Canonici Promovendo. The study day, dedicated to debate over the thorny issue of the state financing for Catholic schools, was attended by several leading canon lawyers and academics from the Roman Curia and pontifical universities, Catholic educators, opinion leaders and doctoral students. The discussion was facilitated by Rev. David M. Jaeger, O.F.M. [7] (Faculty of Canon Law, Pontifical University Antonianum [8]) with a special lecture delivered by the Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education [9], Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski [10], and a roundtable session. Some of the issues addressed were the meaning of the constitutional separation between state and religion, the threat of fragmentation of the national community, and the freedom of the Church to proclaim its mission through education. Acton’s President, Rev. Robert A. Sirico [11], and Director of Research, Dr. Samuel Gregg [12], made contributions on behalf of the Institute.
